We love the challenge of creating new innovative workshops just for you. Whether you are working on a particular set text or you have specific learning outcomes you want to achieve, we will deliver the training for you, wherever and whenever you like.
The British Academy of Dramatic Combat is the oldest stage combat organisation in the world with internationally recognised qualifications. Intensives are full time courses which culminate in a BADC examination or showcase. Courses range from 5 to 10 days in length depending on the choice of BADC Level: Foundation, Standard, Intermediate or Advanced. Courses can be stand alone or integrated into an existing course. The teachers, assistants, weaponry and exam fees are all included.
Action Film Lab
This comprehensive fighting for film course provides practical experience of working as a fight performer for camera. Film sets can be both exciting and intimidating as performers are expected to deliver quickly, often with little rehearsal in a highly pressured environment. We prepare you thoroughly for the task in hand, the course includes: Jargon Busters, Who is who, Shot and Frame Identification, On Set Etiquette, Camera Awareness, Blank Firing Handguns, Squibs, Breakables, Mat and Pad work, FX, Blood, Make-up and Costume, Location Fights, Casting Fight type, Stair Rolling, Armed and Unarmed Combat, Hitting Marks, Doubling, Stand Ins and Safety. All delivered in a 5 to 10 day course.
Rc-Annie was the first company in the UK to provide Aerial Fight workshops. This 3 to 6 day course will introduce participants to the various systems of Aerial work and focus on training the performer to a Professional standard for Film, Theatre and large scale Events not only within film but in the arenas of theatre, opening ceremonies and events. Harness work has become increasingly sophisticated, ambitious and very much in demand. (See showreel page for Aerial course footage).
Many Drama Schools, Colleges and Universities offer Stage Combat as part of their curriculum as regular weekly classes, delivered in 2-4 hour sessions a week. A course of 40 hours is recommended to adequately prepare students to take their BADC certification. The curriculum contains armed and unarmed elements with historical and modern dramatic combat for theatre. Stage Combat naturally brings together all of the performers core skills such as Voice, Movement and Acting into one coherent discipline.
You may choose to run weekly classes that focus on teaching the principles of Stage Combat or a specific Theatrical Weaponry System. These classes can culminate in Certification or a Fight Night showcase.
The RC Way - S.C.R.A.P Training
Spatial awareness, Control Response, Accuracy, Power. A series of workshops catering for all levels, exploring these fundamental elements that help you become a better performer and equip the students for action at all levels.
Inspired by the early swashbuckling movies with quick to learn, flashy sword fighting techniques that exploit your environment. Fight around, on and under furniture. We teach you sword phrases that keep you safe whilst you propel yourself around the set playing with the stock characters of the genre.
Messy looking Comedy fights. How can we make our fights funny? Explore: the rule of 3, misleading the audience, silly actions, trips and falls, clear communication with your audience, underplay, overplay and the payoff. Culminating in creating a comedy Slapstick fight routine.
Black and Blue
Discover how to safely impact and collide with objects, such as walls, tables, fall off chairs and be battered black and blue with a variety of props. This class is taken from our shared experience of working on film sets. We have created our own techniques of how to lessen then blow when working with robust prop items and how to find your feet when being thrown into or over items.
This workshop gives the participants tools to help them perform messy un-choreographed looking fights. Rc-Annie trademark scrappy fighting allows performers to access the action with their own physicality while remaining within a repeatable and safe framework.
Drawing influences from Melodrama, Silent Movies, Film Noir and Shadow Puppetry. We look at the physical story telling of fight and character led action through the art of shadow play. Embracing the challenges of creating clear intensions and dramatic fight imagery through this medium.

We teach and consult for organisations such as The Stage Management Association, Drama Schools, West End and Regional Theatres.
Our Industry recognised Theatrical Handguns course, the only one of it’s kind in the UK, is an essential component to Stage Management Training and is endorsed by the Stage Management Association. We began offering theatrical handgun training in 2005, preempting the 2007 VCRA (Violent Crimes Reduction Act). Our course offers comprehensive practical training and guidance. It has directly affected attitudes and the safe working practices of theatrical gun use in theatres. In addition to our course we offer a consultancy service which stages action, provides training and safety advice for theatrical productions.
Sword and Gun Maintenance
All you need to know about theatrical weaponry from how to identify them to cleaning them. We look at making practical choices on deciding whether an item is ‘safe’, from the practical to the decorative, what to look for when sourcing/hiring weapons and fatigue warning signs. Examine all types of theatrical blades from metal to latex so that you can learn how to identify the type, time period and material its made from. We then discover how to maintain and repair weaponry including the essential items for your tool box.
Blood & Guts!
Blood bags, Blood capsules and more! Messy but fun Blood FX. Get to grips with the gorier side of fights and mock injuries without breaking the budget. Remember to bring a change of clothes because you will get messy and sticky.
A practical workshop on how to get the most out of working with your Fight Director. When to employ one, at what point to invite them in, how to prepare and what to expect both in the rehearsal room and on stage. We will prepare participants with a ‘take away’ warm up for performers and information on how to structure and run fight calls, appoint a Fight Captain, decide where the responsibility lies, deal with props and explore how to ensure the best working practices.
Not sure what is lurking at the back of that old props cupboard? Don't worry, we will sort through all your weird and wonderful weaponry and help you decide what to keep, downgrade to decorative prop, confiscate or surrender. We also photograph and serial all your items for your future reference.
Directing Fights: Conflict of Safety
This workshop can be tailored for Theatre or Film Makers. Drama is conflict, a conflict of wills. Most films and theatre productions involve an element of violence. However budgets can be tight and compromises have to be made, we will help you to ensure that safety is not one of them. Expecting your actors to choreograph their own action is an unnecessary risk, which could cost you more in the long run. In this workshop explore how you make informed choices to protect the physical and emotional safety of your actors. We will address the action scene from the preproduction to the practicalities of rehearsals, choreography and the shoot/performance. Learn about your responsibilities, the law, appropriate weaponry choice, how to utilise your Fight Director/Action Coordinator, Doubles and Actors, varying abilities, setting boundaries, the paperwork protocols and safety procedures. Rc-Annie will introduce you to their unique approach, drawn from our professional experience, we highlight the difficulties of creating authentic, un-choreographed, looking violence.

Physical Theatre focused workshops that explore storytelling through movement and dramatic conflict. From physical interpretation of a specific text to slapstick comedy. Core Learning Outcomes: team work, co-ordination, communication, physical storytelling, improvisation. Example workshops: SLAPSTICK ! The clear language of knockabout violence from the silver screen to the present day. BATTLING THE BARD! A physical exploration of the text and conflict within a Shakespearean play.
Workshops can focus on: period movement, specific fighting styles classical text, contextualisation of a play or a specific historical theme such as The Romans or The Samurai. Core learning outcomes: performing classical text, embodying a character, critical analysis, team work and co-ordination. Example workshop: HAVE AT THEE! Exploring the social and historical context within the strict honour code of the Duel.
A hands on session exploring the use of fake blood for Stage and Screen. Activities can include creating wounds using Theatrical Make Up, how to make and use SBlood Bags and other gory effects. Core learning outcomes: team work, creative problem solving, time/resource management and the practical applications of skills. Example workshop: SBLOOD AND GUTS! - Devise simple blood devices using our SBlood and have a go at applying the devices to a stage scenario.
After School & Drama Clubs
Weekly Stage Combat classes that culminate in a performance showcase. The number of weeks is flexible and we offer the option for students who are 16 years + to take the British Academy of Dramatic Combat Foundation Certificate which is a professionally recognised qualification. Classes work with Theatrical Weaponry or Unarmed Combat Styles and can be tailored to compliment a School project.

The James Plays, The National Theatre of Scotland
I was looking for an unusual activity for my group of colleagues, ideally something that they would not usually think of doing. The event was to celebrate good performance and bring everyone together. When I approached Rc-Annie to ask about organising an evening experience, they were really helpful. They listened to me and made the suggestion of a James Bond vs Jason Bourne Stage Combat workshop. Everything was taken care of by Rc-Annie, from sourcing and booking the venue to planning an event tailored to our group. Even so, I didn't really know what to expect and if I'm honest, I was apprehensive… I had nothing to worry about. From the moment we got to the venue Ruth and Claire got us involved and talked to us about some of the work they've done in film and theatre. After making us curious, they started with some easy moves and everyone got going. By the end of the workshop we had all learned a whole fight scene, fully choreographed with tips and tricks from Rc-Annie. We were having fun with rubber guns, putting each other in chokeholds and rolling around on the floor. You helped us to relax, get excited and learn something new. The next day there was a real buzz in the office, and we even practised our falls and stage punches! RC Annie gave us the BEST staff event we have ever had. We had so, so much fun and we were completely enraptured from start to finish!
