Stage Combat techniques and training for exam students, drop in students and ongoing training for those who do not wish to examine or already have their Level 3, includes Single Weapon Specialisation in the latter half of the course for those who register an interest.

FIGHT LIKE AN ACTION HERO!
Now more than ever actors are required to perform using wires, allowing gravity-defying movements such as multiple flying kicks, mid-air spins and huge leaps.
NOTE: We only have spaces left on the afternoon/evening session 3pm-7pm
We are thrilled to be able to offer a 4 day course combining fighting and flying. We are working with some of the performers from the hit show De La Guarda and Fuerzabruta, to create a course that will not only teach you how to control your body whilst in the air but how to fight whilst up there.
The course will cover:
Safety Harness techniques
Take off and landing
Flips and tumble
Armed and unarmed combat
Fight Choreography
Reactions and performing the fight
Falls and Rolls
Each student will have an opportunity to be videotaped in action, and have a critique session afterwards
The final performance will be filmed for you to take away a souvenir of your experience.

Rc-Annie will be collaborating with Simone Jenkinson to bring you this exciting workshop.
SIMONE JENKINSON
Simone trained as an actress at Rose Bruford School of Speech and Drama in London. Simone performed with the aerial theatre company De La Guarda, touring extensively around the world as an integral member of the team casting and training new companies. Over the past 10 years Simone has taught workshops in physical theatre, mask, and movement for actors in London, Berlin, Prague and Buenos Aires. Simone collaborated in the creation of Fuerza Bruta and proceeded to cast and train new companies. She has been living in Buenos Aires for the past six years where she has consistently taught aerial theatre/dance experimenting with new forms of expressive flight. Simone is a freelance dancer and aerial choreographer, commissions have included the Orange mobile phone campaign by theatre de Complicite and a major Ford car publicity campaign.
Simone is a co founder of the events production company "Cuerda". She is also the artistic director of an independent theatre space "El Galpon" in Buenos Aires.

An explosive day of guns and blood!
Recommended by the SMA
A full day tailored to fulfil the needs of both the Performer and the Stage Manager. Learn how to use a Blank firing handgun on set including the relevant UK gun law and how to work with S’Blood FX. The day is wrapped up with an opportunity to combine all your newfound knowledge in a live action scene
The rules and regulations of using Blank Firing Guns are, at best, confusing. This workshop is designed to clarify the current UK gun law and the use of Realistic Imitation Firearms for Dramatic purposes.
SCHEDULE
Theatrical Handguns and the UK Gun Law
Suitable weaponry for theatre and film including buying, storing and safely dealing with one on set
Creating the illusion of gun handling experience
Live Firing of 3 different blank firers
LUNCH
Blood FX with making blood and blood devices
Have a go practically exploring how to create the right FX (this gets very messy)
Action Scene challenge creating a scene with defined roles for both the SM and the performer. The scene
requires both Guns and Blood FX executed in a safe and efficient manner including
risk assessments
Competition ending the day with a fun competition, reviewing their new found knowledge
Handouts: a certificate of attendance and a does and don’t advice handout.
REQUIREMENTS: Participants are advises to bring a full change of clothing for the Blood session as your will get very messy and sticky.

HSE First Aid Certification Course
3 days 19, 20, 21st of April

In our line of business whether you be a Performer, Fighter, Teacher, Stage Manager or Theatre Technician we cannot help but be very aware of the potential and inherent risks of our working day. As a responsible individual it is our duty and a requirement of our employment to be a qualified First Aider.
This course is tailored to the needs of our business.
WHAT DO YOU RECEIVE?
All participants will receive a comprehensive first aid manual and handouts. All successful participants will receive a HSE certificate and a wallet card, which will be posted individually approximately 2 weeks after competition of course.
The Health and Safety Executive
Why do HSE training? The HSE is responsible for the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981. The Health and Safety Executive is a non-departmental public body in the United Kingdom. It is the body responsible for the encouragement, regulation and enforcement of workplace health, safety and welfare, and for research into occupational risks in England and Wales and Scotland. All theatres look to the HSE for guidance on safety in the workplace which is why we believe them the best to provide work specific first aid training for our industry.
INSTRUCTOR JAMES DRYER
James originally trained as an actor at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in London. He has worked in theatre, film TV and as a trainee stunt performer and drama tutor. As an outdoor instructor/trainer he has led mountaineering, rock climbing, canoeing, bush craft, fitness training and team building activities. He has also lead expeditions and adventure tourism trips in the UK and overseas and has been the Outdoor Education Manager for a Youth Service charity. James is currently a freelance training professional and works in a range of capacities. His clients have included: local education authorities, outdoor centres, professional sports people, health and safety providers, social enterprises and charities. James is qualified in a range of extreme sports and expedition leadership, coaching, personal training, leadership, counselling and management. He is also a recognised provider of Health and Safety Executive First Aid courses and Sports Leadership qualifications for Sports Leaders UK. James holds Accredited Practitioner status with the Institute for Outdoor Learning; he is registered on the Register of Exercise Professionals and is awaiting confirmation of his membership of the Institute of Leadership and Management along with his Fellowship of the Royal Geographic Society.

WAR HORSE

An introduction to Mounted Combat and Riding for Screen

In association with Film Horses
A weekend of learning how to work with trained film action horses. Activities from basic horse control to obstacle courses, riding at the tilt and a knights training. Every performer wants to add Horse Ridding skills to their CV and this course is a perfect way to begin. It’s a great introduction for fighters and action performers and is also ideal for riders wishing to work with the very different signals and commands that a highly trained Film horses demands.

After our hugely successful Swashbuckling course aboard the Golden Hind in London, we are now swishing our way to Devon, offering students the chance to explore the fighting style of Hollywood Swashbuckling, in a highly enjoyable 6 day course. During the 6 days we will explore a wide variety of genres and classic films including: Scaramouche, The Mark of Zorro, Adventures of Robin Hood and the Three Musketeers. You will learn the sword techniques specific to the Hollywood swashbuckling styles coined by Paddy Crean and Bob Anderson and create your own ‘full on’ swashbuckling fight scene!

We return to the lovely Exeter (our second home) for our second Rc-Annie two week intensive at the lovely Cygnet Theatre Training school. In a great social atmosphere (there are lots of fab pubs nearby, being a student town and all) students really learn how to knuckle down and get to grips with the disciple of Stage Combat while still having a good time. Your classes run from Monday to Friday, 9.30 till 6pm, for two weeks of intensive training dedicated to mastering the discipline of stage combat. The course will culminate with a BADC examination. A must for today’s working actor.

Rc-Annie does not offer refunds in any circumstances but may consider deferment in certain cases.

All BADC affiliated courses are taught by BADC qualified tutors and are an 11 week commitment which concludes with an examination. Exam fees are not included in the course fee and are payable separately £20-£35.
Poor attendance may result in students being insufficiently prepared to take the final exam and will be advised accordingly.
Full attendance to the course does not automatically result in and exam pass
Passing your LEVEL THREE EXAM does not qualify you to teach, it does however qualify you (if a Gold Recommended grade is achieved) to approach the BADC training program to become a Teacher (two year program)

SWASHBUCKLING FOR FILM ONBOARD THE GOLDEN HINDE

THE COURSE
A 6 week, one of its kind, course that teaches you traditional sword fighting for film. Looking at a wide variety of genres from Captain Blood to Master and Commander with some optional Peter Pan moments thrown in. You will learn sword techniques specific to film, including the Hollywood swashbuckling styles coined by Paddy Crean and Bob Anderson and get a great opportunity to firmly grip a dagger between you teeth. Uniquely, all classes will be held on Board the Golden Hinde in dock at London Bridge. We will choreograph different sequences in various locations from the Gun Deck to the Rigging. The sequences will be professionally filmed to give you a swashbuckling souvenir, an exceptional show reel or a great opportunity to show off to your fellow vagabonds.
About the vessel
A full-size replica of Sir Francis Drake's 16th century galleon, in demand for filming, weddings and corporate entertainment. The replica itself has traveled the world, having covered over 140,000 miles under sail.

Allen Suddeth created the Fight Director's Workshop which has run successfully for 15 years.A working Broadway and television fight director himself, author of the book, Fight Directing for the Theatre, master teacher at The Lee Strasberg Institute and a Fight Master with the Society of American Fight Directors, Allen shared his methods for four days with a limited number of fight directors and actors.
Materiel covered included: Character and script analysis as it relates to fight choreography. The Fight Directors 10 commandments. Weapons choice. Working with directors, designers, and performers. Pre-production, rehearsals, and tech.

Combat and Stage Fighting is a necessity in today's film and theatre and media industries. The public want to see action sequences, while the performers need to remain safe. This compact
course is an essential element in an actors training it teaches effective illusions of violence, whether unarmed or with weapons.
Its festival time and R&R have decided that we must hold our own festival of fight. So we're off to idyllic North Wales to lead a 2 week Stage Combat Course. This is the only intensive that we will teach this year which is open to external students, so do something useful AND fun with your summer and....

ITALIAN STYLE RAPIER - RAPIER AND DAGGER

Real Fight workshops give us an insight into the practical and historical application of ancient weapons as taught by classical fight masters.
Alberto Di Candia, a well know fight master from Turin, is visiting from Italy to school us in the art of Italian Style Rapier. Alberto has trained and studied in Historical Fencing adapting his discoveries for theatrical use finding a new audience for time honoured sword artistry.
Open to those with and without Stage Combat experience. We will be looking at the techniques used by 17c Fight Masters - Capoferro, Giganti, Fabris and Alfieri, students will be taught the art of movement with the body and the blade including the footwork, cuts and thrusts of the period and how are they are applied. We will also get to explore "Fun tricks" like disarms, close game, fake thrusts, "cavazione e controcavazione"

Guns & S’Blood

A full day of Theatrical Handguns and Fake S’Blood FX.
The day is tailored to fulfill the needs of both the stage manager and the performer. Learn the does and donts of using a Blank firing gun on stage and set including the current UK gun law. S’Blood FX explores how to make fake blood and how to create your own appropriate blood FX. The day is wrapped up with an opportunity to create your own scene combining a live Gun fire and your choice of S’blood fx.

INDUSTRY INTENSIVE 7/8th JUNE 2008

At this years Industry Intensive we aim to bring in teachers and lead workshops that break the mold discover to explore new approaches to our craft. This is an opportunity for Fight Teachers, Apprentices, Martial Artists, Actors, Directors and Stage Managers to play, learn and try new styles and techniques. A chance to share and meet other like minded people. We are flying John Lennox all the way from Jackson, Michigan to join us for this year’s Industry Intensive.
JOHN LENNOX
John "Doc" Lennox has trained in various forms of swordplay for over 20 years. Beginning with the katana, he later moved into the western weapon styles. Through his involvement in stage combat for theatre over the past 22 years he began to study a myriad of weapons. He is a Fight Director for Art of Combat, teaches stage combat at Lansing Community College and Wayne State University, and is the in-house fight director for both of these institutions as well as Spring Arbor University.
WORKSHOPS INCLUDED:The Cabala and the Cube, Boarding Axe and Cutlass, Types of Fighters with John Lennox. Breakables and Hollywood Swashbuckling with Rc-Annie. Kalaripayettu Short Stick with Kevin Rowntree and An Introduction to Kali fighting.

CAPO FERRO
With Jared Kirby
Jared Kirby spent a couple of hours instructing our students in the arts of Capo Ferro Rapier style. Jared began studying historical fencing in Minneapolis; he moved to Scotland in to work with Maestro Paul Macdonald, on Italian Rapier, Longsword and Dusack. He is the editor and one of the translators of Italian Rapier Combat, the first complete, professional translation of Capo Ferro's 1610 treatise. He is an Instructor for the Martinez Academy New and co-founder of The New Dawn Duellists Society in Minneapolis. |

THE PIRATES OF MUTINY BAY AT ALTON TOWERS
This year we had the pleasure of arranging the fights for a new Pirate attraction at Alton Towers. The show is called The Pirates of Mutiny Bay which is a fun high energy family show.
We had a great time and were made very welcome by all.

Robert Goodwin - Sword Master and Fight/Stunt Coordinator. It's not often that you get a chance to work with someone of Bob's calibre for a full day. Robert G. Goodwin has over thirty years' martial arts experience, eighteen years' experience in European weapons, and has trained or choreographed many of Hollywood's leading actors and actresses including: Jennifer Tilly, Christian Bale and The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The day included: Capo Ferro, Martial Arts to Film Fighter, and Intro to fighting style of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. |

FILM FIGHT COURSE AT THE ROUNDHOUSE STUDIOS
We were thrilled to be asked back by The Roundhouse again earlier this year. We were employed this time to Teach and Fight Arrange on a Filming Fights Course in their studios. We also ran a Battling the Bard Shakespearean fight workshop to tie in with their RSC season. It was a lot of fun and a great to get a chance to work with enthusiastic aspiring filmmakers. |

Riding Dolbadarn fully trained Action Stallions novices will begin to understand the importance of a balanced seat, aids and voice commands. Then we'll progress to riding under tuition with props... helmet and sword so that they can get a feel for it.

Wow. I've had a fantastic 10 weeks in North America. I was completely overwhelmed by the generosity extended to me from the people I was visiting. The practitioners I met opened their homes, classes, rehearsal rooms and minds to me, I am eternally grateful to everyone I met i North America especially Allen Suddeth, Lloyd Caldwell, Dan Levinson and the guys at Rapier Wit, John Lennox, Michelle Ladd, Dale Girard, Bob Goodwin David Woolley, Babes with Blades, Dom and Jess Green and Richard Gilbert. I have learnt so much and can't wait to incorporate this into my own work and development. I have many ideas of things I want to explore I will be using the fighting form classes on a Monday night to start this process.

Surprisingly, it’s much harder than you think being hit over the head with a fake bottle and it hurts too! But the hardest thing is making the break look realistic without everything just shattering into smithereens. We look at the safest methods of working with breakables, how to protect yourself and others. |

KALARIPAYETTU SHORT STICK
Guest tutor Kevin Rowntree has just recently returned from South East India were he has been studying Kalaripayettu and brings a taste of it with him on Thursday. Kevin is a Stage Combat Instructor for the BADC. Kevin has taught at the University of Leeds, New York University, University of Hong Kong, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Mountview, Bretton Hall, Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts & Schools and Colleges throughout the UK. |

BLANK FIRING HANDGUNS (REGULAR WORKSHOPS)
As recommended by the Stage Management Association: A workshop for those of you who have to handle a Blank Firing Gun either onstage or behind the scenes. Explore the do’s and don’ts of working with a blank firing gun on set/location. Learn how to look like you’re a skilled marksman/woman. Discover how not to upset the Gun Wrangler/Prop dept/SM. This is a comprehensive discussion on gun handling techniques and the new UK GUN laws, with an opportunity to fire two to three different blank firers. Learn to load, clean and fire in as safe a manner as possible. |

S’BLOOD & GUTS!
Ever wonder how blood appears at just the right moment or how to maximise the use of Stage Blood? If so, this is the workshop for you! A VERY practical class, which gives you the chance to get your hands dirty. Methods such as blood sponges, bags, syringes, blood knives and a free S’Blood sample on the night! Please bring a change of clothes and be prepared to get messy! |
TUMBLING
The basis of Acrobatics is a good handstand – harder than you think!?!?!?! Don’t be intimidated or put off by thinking you’re not capable. This series of 6, easy, once a week sessions will give you the confidence to tackle any tumble. If you get the basics right the rest is easy! |

FENCING COACHING COURSE
This qualification is one part of the Equity Fight Directors requirements. An introductory award designed for those who wish to begin to teach Fencing. Candidates who successfully reach the required standard should be able to take absolute beginners – either singly or in small groups – and to teach them the basic strokes of Fencing. Limited to just 10 places. What do I need: A basic understanding of Fencing. |
RC-ANNIE AT THE ROUNDHOUSE
We assisted on the Dramathon event at The Roundhouse in Camden. Well we had a ripping time in a wonderful venue. Many thanks to all our great assistants Matt, Sam, Sib, Claire and Clare you did us proud. The Dramathon focused on themes recognition, conflict and connection. We collaborated with an amazing West End Choreographer: Omar Okai. The students were great and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. After the workshop we experienced the Fuerzabruta Show, oh and downed several beers too. Here’s to more like minded events. |
