TECHNICAL WORKSHOPS & COURSES

All our workshops are run by qualified and experienced (BADC) Tutors, who are CRB checked and fully insured. Workshops can last from 2 hours to a several days and be tailored to your choosing.

Stage Combat is a great form of exercise that relies heavily on teamwork, trust and self-discipline

THEATRICAL HANDGUNS 3- 6hrs

The rules and regulations about the use of Blank Firing Guns are, at best, confusing. This workshop is designed to clarify the current UK gun law and the exceptions for using Realistic Imitation Firearms for Dramatic purposes. We start with a discussion on the Law, the types of suitable weaponry for theatre and film, buying and storing weaponry and how to deal with one on set. We then learn how to hold the weapon correctly and to create the illusion of gun handling experience while adhering to the does and don’ts. In a ‘hands on’ session we look at the different weapons available and how they work. We then give you an opportunity to fire 3 different styles of blank firers in a safe environment. The session concludes with a feedback debrief and a quiz on what you have learnt. Hand outs are distributed at the end of the session. We are happy to add to this workshop an acted scene section or to combine with the use of a breakables, S’Blood or an FD workshop.

A FULL DAY OF GUNS & S’BLOOD!

The day is tailored to fulfill the needs of both the stage manager and the performer. The day is wrapped up with an opportunity to create your own scene combining a live Gun Fire and your choice of S’Blood FX.

S'BLOOD Using fake blood can be a messy and frustrating process at times so why not learn a few cheap tricks of the trade. From DIY blood bags to making your own favorite blood recipe.

THEATRICAL HANDGUNS As recommended by the Stage Management Association: A workshop for those of you who want to learn to handle a Blank Firing Gun either onstage or behind the scenes. Learn how to look like you’re a skilled marksman/woman. Discover how not to upset the Gun Wrangler/Prop dept/SM. This is a comprehensive class based on gun handling techniques and the new UK GUN laws. Learn to load, clean and fire in as safe a manner as possible. The workshop will be led by Ruth Cooper-Brown who has written an article featured in The Stage and printed in the SMA newsletter on theatrical handguns and their use in British Theatres.

Half Day Workshops

S’BLOOD & GUTS! 2hrs

Blood bags, Blood knives, Knives through arms, Blood capsules and brains! Messy but fun Blood FX. Get to grips with the gorier side of fights and mock injuries. Ever wondered how they get the right amount of blood to the right place at the right time? Now is your chance to get stuck in! Remember to bring a change of clothes because you will get messy.

SBREAKABLES 2hrs

Create your own Barroom Brawl or domestic Soap Opera scene. Learn how to punch like John Wayne and Clint Eastwood or slap like a Fowler. Surprisingly, it’s much harder than you think being hit over the head with a fake bottle and it hurts too! But the hardest thing is making the break look realistic without everything just shattering into smithereens!

WORKING WITH A FD 2hrs

It can be a worry when you don’t have any experience of how to get the best out of your Fight Director, so for this purpose we have devised a session to explore how to work along side your Fight Director throughout the whole theatrical and film process to successfully end up with the best results. Find out what a FD can do to make your job easier. At what point should you employ an FD? How much should you expect to pay? This workshop has a live interactive fight choreographing session to further explore the role of the FD.
