Comedy Characters & Knockabout

Add colour and energy into your event with our larger than life characters

Knockabout walkabout

It all kicks off with a small public disagreement that degenerates throughout the day into full scale war! All walkabouts are highly interactive and contain live knockabout fights

TIT FOR TAT

Two super serious Rapier Duellists with deadly intent are hunting one another. Once met the Code Duello ensues as time, date and place are set (at a safe distance from audience, of course) OTT Errol Flynn style Swashbuckling continuously erupts, as the insult to their honour increases by each duel. Thankfully their honour is never satisfied to great comic effect.

POOP DECKER’S

Two lost pirates in search of their missing treasure soon discover, to their dismay, that they have the wrong map! It doesn’t take long before their frustrations are taken out on each other with slapstick scuffles and dastardly skulduggery. Lashing of Sword Fighting with Cutlasses and with the odd rubber fish thrown in for good measure!

FOOLISH FIGHTS

Two unarmed and out of work Jesters seeking employment and a free meal suddenly spy one another. The old rivals instantly erupt into fury over an unspecified ancient grudge. Using whatever weapon that comes to hand, with bread rolls and custard pies a plenty, they mercilessly wrestle each other into submission or until one narrowly escapes to jest another day.

PIXIE PRANKS

Lively antics with a dash of healthy mayhem and chaos spice up your festivities as our two professional idiots interfere and attempt to ‘lend a hand’ throughout the day. From imaginary queuing, to foam sword fights. Bad jokes, foam bricks, tricks and good hearted nonsense abound.

Costumed Characters

Help to run your event with colourful characters as guides and activity organisers,
feel free to request characters of your choice to suit the event

KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOUR

Not only does he look like he is straight out of a Fairy Tale. Our Knight can answer all your questions about life in days of yore, including what it was really like as a Tournament Champion in the late medieval period. He is heroic to all damsels and a role model to young Squires. Our Hero has a wealth of historical anecdotes and a few more colourful tales too!

KING AND QUEEN OF MAY

Your very own Royalty to perform duties throughout the day such as Knighting those who are ‘worthy’ and subtly insulting the less worthy minions around them. An honoured visit from Royalty cannot but help to elevate your event. The dynastic duo are ideal for opening events, leading parades, running games competitions, and activities as well as character walkabout.

Storytelling

Weaving of Worlds 1 storyteller

Our collector of stories has a tale to tell for every single item found upon her person. Every item of clothing, every bauble and every tiny memento. She weaves a path of legend and myth, faerie and folk tales through the ages and from around the world.

Illuminated Storytelling 1-3 storytellers

Like the Illuminated Manuscripts of old and reminiscent of a favourite, well loved, book of Fairy tales. The stories spread out beneath you like a comforting blanket. The vivid imagery and actions literally leap off the page at you. Watch the tales take on a life of their own as they spring from the written word.

Black Hearted Ballads 1-3 storytellers

From the original dark Gests of Robin Hood to the shadowy morality tales of the Brothers Grimm. The narrator weaves you into a tapestry of rich characters and dastardly deeds, as the dust is blown off the covers and life is breathed back into the tales of old. Pirate tales range from Anne Bonney to Jack Sparrow.

Festival Fun

‘Have a go’

Activities for all ages

Circus Workshops

Learn new skills at the ‘have a go’ circus workshop. There are lots of toys and circus apparatus. Items include: Mini tightrope, mini trampoline, mini bike, unicycle, stilts, juggling balls, clubs, silks and bags, spinning plates, Diablo’s, devil sticks, giant games, dancing ribbons and balloon modelling. Workshops come complete with a clown to show you the ropes.

Little Squires

Try on the knight’s armour; test the mettle of his swords and feel the weight of his shield. As an honorary squire you can learn about battles, sword fighting and jousting all direct from a real attending knight in shining armour. Nothing beats the feel of wearing a real gauntlet or helm, even if it is a little too big!

Archery

Everyone loves playing with a bow and arrow ever since they were kids. With 10lb and 20lbs draw bows both children (from the age of 7) and adults alike can try their hand at becoming a medieval archer.

Two costumed characters teach you how to safely let loose.

The Hobby Horse Joust

One of our most popular activities. Little would be knights get a chance to experience a pint sized joust. Riding a trusty steed, armed with a foam lance and wearing a knight’s helmet as they tackle the stepping stones, winding path, try to pick up the training hoops, hit the Quintain without being hit by our tame dragon (cuddle toy) and test their archery skills with foam arrows against a real target. Valliant knights are rewarded for their bravely by becoming knighted.

Sand Painting

Everyone can have a go at sand painting from the very young to the very old. Swirl the different coloured sands to create your painting, finger paint or shake them like an Etch-a-sketch. Participants are encouraged to display their works of art or to take them home.

Face Painting

Old favourite of the festival goer. Hypoallergenic water based face paints. Become a super hero, pirate or a little monster. Paint on a smile.

Slapstick Workshops

Emulate buster Keaton or Itchy and Scratchy as you learn simple and safe knockabout routines and fun comedy moves.

Fortune Telling

A 5 or 20 minute reading either just for fun or for a little bit of ‘me time’ pampering. Choose from a simple past, present and future (3 card) reading or dive into an in depth full reading.

"The ‘have-a’go’ was a big hit, along with hobby-horse jousting and archery, making a truly traditional May Day festival…Crowds were also entertained by the antics of strolling costumed characters, including madcap Jesters, merry maids and even a knight in shining armour from ‘RC-Annie’ the live action event specialists…Other activities include the ever-popular art and story tents, face painting and balloon modelling too.   Demonstrations

Tailored fight demonstrations for the family market.
3 performers create 20 minute presentations, in any period with any weapon.

SWASHING YER BUCKLER

Our most popular themed demo (as performed aboard ship on the Golden Hinde) Experience the difference between real fight and the swashbuckling style of 1930’s Hollywood. See why this sword fighting craze became so popular and help our poor pirates to create your ideal swashbuckling fight, from our multiple choice fight demos.

ROUGH JUSTICE

A tale of the not so ‘just’ Medieval Justice System. We take a look at the sometimes bizarre and downright gory medieval ways of deducting the truth, including the Dog duel (pssst – the dog wins!) and features a live comedy ‘guts an all’ judicial duel!

SMALL SWORD SHENANIGANS

Two very proper Victorian ladies perform (in their under garments, as was the norm) a highly complex yet beautiful sword routine to demonstrate the techniques of Small Sword fighting and the attributes of the Court Sword itself.

A LESSON WITH THE FENCING MASTER

Take a peek at a private session with the super stern fencing master. The head of the household is put through his paces with all the fencing practice and terminology of the time.
